T he regions of Barolo and Brunello continue to gain popularity with collectors, as the top-scoring wines become nearly impossible to find and the secondary markets push their prices through the roof. This year we witnessed the release of the highly- anticipated 2013s from Barolo and 2012s from Brunello di Montalcino, and with it, the mad dash to secure parcels that seem to get smaller and smaller with every passing year. However, there is a silver lining to it all, because there's much more to Italy than Piedmont and Tuscany. As the country's young winemakers look to the success of their neighbors, a new emphasis is being placed on improvements in vineyards and cellars, as well as the importance of terroir. Today, the volcanic regions of Mount Etna, Vulture and Taurasi are producing age-worthy wines of stature, which have yet to fall victim to a rise in prices due to demand. These are the regions that collectors should be paying serious attention to, because it's only so long before the word gets out. It's a good time to be a lover of Italian wine. ✦
