However, it wasn't until the early '80s that the Marquis Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga decided to create a wine styled after the wines of the Haut Médoc in Bordeaux, replacing indigenous varietals with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Often misunderstood in its youth, the result of its cool-climate origins, San Leonardo is a wine that matures beautifully for decades. It's not the Bordeaux blend that you'll find in today's Bordeaux, California, or Tuscany—instead it's closer to what it may have been 100 years ago. However, Elisabetta was determined to change that. Her work in the vineyards has paid off, and we are now being treated to single-vineyard expressions from her best vines.
