As the wine world opens its mind to regions outside of Barolo, we start to hear about the prestigious vineyards throughout the north to which the Rovellotti are well acquainted—they own a number of parcels within them. From the Baraggiola vineyard, Rovellotti produces the Costa del Salmino Riserva, hailing from some of the oldest vines in the region, which have been hand-tended and raised organically for over thirty years. After crush and fermentation, the riserva spends three years or more in barrel before being bottled and put down to rest. This is a wine that has been perfectly matured in the winery's cellar for over six years. The Costa del Salmino is just starting to show a hint of early maturity, but it will only improve over the course of the next two decades, and will compete with the best that Barolo has to offer. ✦ Rovellotti Ghemme Riserva Costa del Salmino 2008 $49 "Intense and layered. Incredibly long and precise. Where the '07 seduced us with it's vibrant fruit, '08 promises decades of evolution." E. Guido (1555146) a b ona F ide b arolo k iller
