This had more to do with adhering to the highest standards and attention to detail than it did with oak barrels. In the end, only a handful of producers can look back with pride, and Domenico Clerico is firmly at the top of the list. Of Clerico's list of esteemed cru Barolos, it is without a doubt the Ciabot Mentin that stands as his towering achievement. Hailing from the Ginestra vineyard, Ciabot Mentin is the "Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove" expression of Barolo that we've come to love. ✦ Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 2010 ST 95+ » $92 "...classy but tightly wound, showing utterly primary flavors...excellent clarity for a spectacular evolution in bottle." In the winery, the fruits sees long macerations, fermentation in open wood vats, and aging in large neutral barrels, and is then rested in bottle for two years longer than required by law. The result of Luca's labor is the Barolo Pira, one of the most classic, old- school Barolo you are likely to ever encounter. ✦ Roagna Barolo Pira 2010 AG 95 » $95 "The 2010 Barolo Pira is an old-school knockout. It's as simple as that." (1558182) The h is T ory Maker T he history of Damilano Barolo goes back over 125 years, when Giuseppe Borgogno decided to vinify his own estate wines. Today the Damilano family upholds the traditions that made this house great, producing a number of wines from the top vineyards of Barolo. The names Cannubi, Cerequio, and Brunate are known the world over, yet for our tastes, it's the Barolo Liste that exceeded in the great 2010 vintage. Produced through traditional techniques and aging in large botti, the Liste displays the darker side of Nebbiolo contrasted by the limestone-driven minerality that this site is famous for. ✦ Damilano Barolo Liste 2010 ML 95 » $74 "...utterly seductive and charming from start to long finish...proverbial opulence and hedonistic plumpness that is not easy to achieve..."
