Thought to be one of the earliest second wines produced in history, going back to the 1850s, Carruades de Lafite takes its name from a specific section of the vineyard, which is located near the Chateau. Over a decade ago Lafitte's managing director Charles Chevallier decided that Carruades should be something more. Since the 2005 vintage a new emphasis was placed on the raw materials and elevage of the wine, and with those changes a drastic increase in quality has followed. We are only now starting to see what this wine is capable of, and it's collectibility increases with every passing day. ✦ Carruades de Lafite Pauillac 2010 JS 95 » $250 "...bouquet of flowers with blueberries and currants and spices. Full body, yet agile and refined. So fine and pretty. It's balanced and in harmony..." (1005173) a Model o F p er F ec T Ma T uri T y T he second growth Gruaud Larose is one of the few Bordeaux estates whose vineyard exists in one solid block, which has remained largely unchanged since its creation in 1781. Essentially, this is the exact same terroir that was granted second growth status in the Medoc classification of 1855. The 1989 Gruaud Larose is a perfect example of why this estate was granted its second growth status in the first place. It's a blend consisting primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot, and it's made in a truly traditional style. In its youth, the 1989 was powerful and difficult read, yet now it's revealing gorgeous secondary and tertiary layers. The wine is perfectly seated in its drinking window yet still with the potential to improve in the cellar. ✦ Gruaud Larose St Julien 1989 WS 94 » $175 "Open and luscious, with amazing richness of fruit and decadence..."
