His love for wine was his driving force, as were memories of picking grapes with his grandfather as a child. It started with plantings of Grenache and Syrah, and it grew as Gérard acquired parcels of old-vine Carignan, and before long, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Today, Puech-Haut sits within its own appellation of Coteaux de Languedoc, Saint Drézéry, one of the region's smallest, which is very much the result of Gérard's efforts. With the addition of Philippe Cambie as consulting winemaker since 2008, Puech-Haut continues on a steady rise to success. ✦ Puech Haut Coteaux de Languedoc Prestige Rouge 2013 JD 93 » $19 "Fresh, elegant and thrillingly pure...decidedly sexy and forward, yet stays perfectly balanced..." (1470337) Taking The h ard r oad o livier Jullien knows the landscape of the Languedoc well. He watched throughout his childhood as a region that depended on mass production struggled with the ability make ends meet. Yet he also saw a potential in the land that others overlooked. At the age of twenty Olivier created his own small label, Mas Jullien. It was a hard road, but now it's almost 30 years later, and the name Mas Jullien has earned the reputation as the regions guiding light for traditionally made wines of terroir. Don't expect to find gobs of fruit and purple inflections in a glass of Mas Jullien. Instead, what you'll find is a serious wine of the earth with grip and savage power. You're likely to think of the northern Rhone before the south of France, as Mas Jullien is a wine that transcends all expectations. ✦ Mas Jullien Terrasses du Larzac Cuvée Carlan Languedoc Roussillon 2012 JD 91–93 » $41 "...Fabulously perfumed and complex...full-bodied richness, notable purity of fruit and building, chewy tannin that emerge on the finish. I love the overall profile here..." (1470198)
