This cool-climate location has been producing wine since the middle ages. However, it has only been over the course of the last decade that a new-found interest has secured Jura as a household name. Jean-Francois Ganevat comes from a long line of family winemakers that dates back to 1650. Having cut his teeth at the Domaine Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet, he chose to return to the family vineyards and take on the mantle of winemaker. His first decision was to move completely to biodynamics throughout the vineyards, which hold no less than seventeen different local varieties. With a selection such as this to chose from, Jean-Francois creates a number of micro-cuvees. Each one is vinified differently to achieve the optimal expression of variety and place. The difficult part is not in deciding whether to place Ganevat in your cellar, it's deciding which one to chose. The 2003 Savagnin Vignes de Mon Pere Blanc is one of our favorites. ✦ Domaine Ganevat Savagnin v ignes de Mon Pere Blanc 2003 $139 (1470167) b eyond b eaujolais W hen most people think of Beaujolais, they think of an easy going, light-hearted red to help usher in the fall season. However this misconception is based on one of the most successful marketing campaigns in wine history, for the category of Beaujolais Nouveau. These wines have their place, and we love them as much as anyone else, but their success has trained us to think that the region isn't capable of producing a more serious wine, when in fact it already does. Welcome to Morgon, a region at the very southern tip of Burgundy that specializes in cru Beaujolais. Here the wines are made from the Gamay grape, showing remarkable weight and structure, while also providing depths of fruit and minerality. The producer Mee Godard was drawn here less than four years ago, and is already producing a lineup of cru designated Morgon that is thrilling critics and consumers alike. ✦ Domaine Mee Godard Morgon Cote du Py 2014 JR 93 » $33 "...perfumed, redcurrant and crushed strawberry nose with fine mineralité...medium-bodied with fine definition, fresh and lively... generous on the finish.
