Located in Courthezon, with vineyard holdings spread throughout the region, Janasse consistently produces a portfolio of top-shelf Châteauneuf- du-Pape that are noteworthy for their undeniable elegance, verve and longevity. However, the insider's wine at this estate is not a Chateauneuf—It's the Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues. Les Garrigues is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape in all but name. Hailing from red clay and pebbly soil, blown by the Mistral wind, in the north-west of the appellation. It's here that old- vine Grenache is grown through natural practices to create Les Garrigues. Cover the label of the bottle and you'd never know you were drinking Cotes du Rhone. Consider it a respectful nod from one of the region's greatest producers, as Janasse grows, vinifies and bottles Les Garrigues the same way they would with their top cuvées. ✦ Janasse Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues 2012 JD 93 » $48 "...the 2012 Côtes du Rhône les Garrigues is, as one famous winemaker put it, a giant-slayer...about as good as Cotes du Rhone gets..." (1470212) Top- s hel F , a ge-Wor T hy and a Tre M endous v alue d omaine du Gour de Chaulé was created over a century ago but spent much of that time selling their wine to the top producers of the Rhone. It was only 35 years ago that the decision was made to estate-bottle. With hand- tended and harvested fruit from estate-owned plots within the top crus of the region, they produce their one Gigondas, the Tradition. This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre comes from vines planted over 60 years ago. The fruit is crushed and fermented with stems intact and ages in large neutral oak foudres for 18 months. This recipe for success creates an intensely aromatic wine of incredible depth and regal structure. ✦ Domaine du Gour de Chaule Gigondas Cuvée Tradition 2012 JR 92–93 » $29 "Highly perfumed scents...garrigue, incense and smoky minerals. Sappy, seamless and appealingly sweet...spicier on the finish, which features supple tannins..." (1413086)
