With 25 plots spread across 17 lieux-dits, the brothers chose to stay the course, ignoring the trends of big, oak-inflected Cote Rotie and producing a traditional wine which spoke of the earth from which it came. It may not have been the popular choice at the time, but today it has paid off ten-fold. The style was driven by the vintage, as these brothers would blend from their parcels throughout the Cote Brune, and to a lesser extent the Cote Blonde, to create wines of remarkable balance and longevity. Their insistence on whole-cluster fermentation marked the wines with exotic textures and alluring aromas. Jamet established itself as the wine by which traditional Cotie Rotie would be judged. However, as fate would have it, the brothers decided to part ways, yet Jean-Paul along with his wife Corinne continue to carry the torch. ✦ Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie 2012 JR 94 » $125 "...Complex, highly perfumed bouquet...Juicy and focused on the palate...this concentrated yet lively Côte-Rôtie finishes with superb clarity and even tannins." It was no mistake that the vineyards he chose had received personal attention from passionate farmers over the decades. Alain continued this practice and decided to use only organic methods throughout his vineyards. In the winery, he prefered only whole-cluster fermentation and aging in 1-3 year-old barrels, obtained through some of the top houses in Burgundy. The end result was a robust Syrah of exuberance yet firmly rooted in the northern Rhone. Now, after 30 years of making honest wine, Alain Graillot has become the most highly sought-after Crozes Hermitage in production today. The winemaking is now fully in the hands of Alain's son, Maxime Graillot, who has chosen to change nothing. This is wonderful news for lovers of the greatest cult producer of Crozes Hermitage. ✦ Alain Graillot Crozes Hermitage 2014 JR 90 » $35 "...seldom hard-edged, overly tannic or in need of extended cellaring. In fact, they are often flat-out delicious..." (1414025)
