As this continues, we risk losing the diversity that exists throughout these great vineyards. h owever, there are a small number of producers who have worked to assure that these small pockets of prestigious terroir won't be lost over time—the most notable of which is Louis Barruol. You may know this name from the iconic house of St. Cosme, where Louis (almost single-handedly) put Gigondas on the map. Recently, he has turned his attention to the Northern Rhone. Together with Kermit Lynch, Louis began sourcing fruit from tiny parcels, each one tended to by a farmer who adheres to the same principles and standards that Louis uses throughout his own vineyards. Once delivered to the winery, Louis works his magic. This collaboration between Kermit Lynch and Louis Barruol is likely to become the next generation of chase wines from the Northern Rhone. They really are that good. ✦ Louis Barruol Cote-Rotie Neve (Cote Brune) 2014 WS 92 » $77 "...dried sage and savory accents that steadily give way to bitter cherry and damson plum...The long echo of dark fruit bodes well for the cellar."
