Established in 1859, and now with access to over 500 acres throughout Burgundy from the Côte d'Or to the Mâconnais and down into Beaujolais, Louis Jadot is capable of producing consistently excellent wines in every price range and category. Yet, as we moved from barrel to barrel, some wines truly spoke to us, while others did not. At this tasting, it was the Premier Cru Les Cazetiers that caught our attention. Sitting above the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Cazetiers produces rich, structured and powerful wines with tremendous aging potential. The vineyard benefits from a higher altitude, southeast exposures, and a mix of limestone and marl soils. When these elements come together in a cooler vintage, like 2014, the results are stunning. The 2014 Louis Jadot Les Cazetiers is not to be missed. ✦ Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2014 ST 91–94 » $130 "...Highly complex...Rich, pliant and slightly wild...serious but smooth tannins and rising, palate-staining length." Usually anyone with potential is quickly identified and made very public, yet somehow the Domaine Marc Roy has managed to fly under the radar. Alexandrine Roy is a fourth-generation winemaker from the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. Her holdings consist of only four hectares, which she tends to personally with precision and care. The fruit is destemmed entirely, crushed by foot, and sees only a small amount of new oak. For Alexandrine, it's the purity of fruit that compels her; that and the character of each vintage. ✦ Marc Roy Gevrey Chambertin v ieilles v ignes 2014 BH 89 » $67 "...cool and complex...fine volume and richness...vibrant medium- bodied flavors that possess equally good complexity...This is a lovely villages and worth a look."
