The soil is of volcanic origins which retains heat and forces vines to dig deep in search of nutrients. It's here that Daphne Glorian of Clos Erasmus decided to make her wines, employing biodynamic principals to her selection of ancient vines. Laurel is Daphne's expression of Priorat produced from the "younger" vines throughout her vineyards. However, to call Laurel a second wine does not do it justice, as it stands tall next to the best that Priorat has to offer. ✦ Clos e rasmus Laurel Priorat 2013 JR 93 » $57 "Juicy and incisive...Packs a powerful punch but comes off lithe and precise..." (1636012) u nexpec T ed in p rior a T W hile red Priorat is about intensity, the white variety, Garnacha Blanca, is about poise and contrasts. Aromatically, these wines can drive you wild through their floral-tinged layers of minerality. Yet on the palate, the expression turns to soothing textural richness. Mas La Mola benefits from having access to the Fernando estate, and their 150 year-long history of vine-growing. The Blanco is made from vines planted at 450 meters on steep slopes consisting of llicorella slate. The perfect drainage, mineral-infusing soils, and the push and pull of Priorat's unique climate, creates fruit of tremendous character. ✦ Mas La Mola Blanco 2012 $33 "Refreshing to start, but gained tremendous depth over time."
