At least that's what most of us thought, until Piero Incisa della Rocchetta tasted one from the region and was so impressed with the potential in the glass that he became determined to seek out its source. Piero Incisa della Rocchetta grew up in a family of world- class wine makers within the surroundings of their Tuscan, Maremma estate, which you probably do know—Sassicaia. What he found in Argentina was even better than he had expected. Located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, he found an oasis in the middle of the desert, filled with old- vines that had been completely unaffected by phylloxera. This is due to the extremely high content of sand and gravel in the soil. His first acquisition was of an abandoned vineyard full of gnarled Pinot Noir vines, planted on their own rootstocks in 1932. Then another planted in 1955 and one from 1967. Fast forward over a decade, and Chacra has now found its place among the top Pinot Noir being made in the world. The Cincuenta Y Cinco, produced from 60-year-old vines, is not to be missed and represents a tremendous value in Pinot Noir.
