Winemaking in this region is nothing new, but the attention to detail and quality has been quietly growing by leaps and bounds. The story began in 1997, when Yiannis Boutaris left Boutari Wine Group, which was established by his grandfather in 1879. Over forty years ago, Yiannis planted Xinomavro vines on the eastern foothills of Mt Vermion, the same vineyard that now produces the Kir-Yianni Ramnista. Xinomavro, which is sometimes compared to Burgundy and Barolo, is also known to be a fickle grape, in need of careful attention. In the right hands, it can produce wines of immeasurable depth, refinement and the desire to mature in the cellar, which is the real value in Xinomavro. We've seen it before, as passionate people give up their day jobs in search of vinous fulfillment, and it should come as no surprise that the same people tend to make some of the best wines in their category. Sucette is one such wine, which was born of a passion for Grenache and the love for the wines of Rayas. Carla and Richard Rza Betts put their lives behind them in search of the perfect location to realize their ideal Grenache. As fate would have it, that location was the Vine Vale in South Australia. A surprising location to be sure, but what the Vine Vale provided them were deep sandy soils and a terroir which was heavily affected by cooling influences. Add the vineyard, with its own rooted vines that are over 90 years old, and having never been treated with a single chemical fertilizer, and suddenly it all starts to make sense. Carla and Richard like to refer to their uber-natural winemaking style as "Feral".
