He has also been a key player in a campaign to show the world what Austria is capable of, and through it all, he has been willing to invest himself in the further development of the region. That's how Sohm & Kracher came into being. Along with partner and winemaker Gerard Kracher, they have developed a brand based on Gruner Veltliner grown throughout Austria's Weinviertel region. The style is dry, showing intense mineral depth complimented by Gruner's inherent textural richness. They are a perfect example of the raw potential that can be found throughout the region. While the Alte Reben provides a more approachable yet highly appealing style, we would place St. Georg next to the top wines of the region. ✦ s o H m & Kra CH er g runer Veltliner rating bottle Alte Reben 2013 (1660245) SR 90 $25 St. Georg 2013 (1660246) SR 92+ $34 More T han Mee T s T he e ye n eumeister is located in the Vulkanland Steiermark, which is a region that is known for its production of Traminer. However, it's in these rich and fertile slopes that we find a soil type which is heavily influenced by the remnants of an extinct volcano, along with calcareous sediment and shell limestone, an ideal location for the production of Sauvignon Blanc. Neumeister follows a strict organic approach in their premier cru vineyard of Klausen. This is followed by spontaneous fermentation and aging for twelve months in large neutral- wood barrels. The result is a complex and stunningly mineral- driven Sauvignon Blanc, one which will keep you coming back again and again. ✦ Albert Neumeister Sauvignon Blanc Klausen 2013 JP 91 » $33 "...Complex aromas...Dense, succulent and vibrantly chalky... finishes with excellent floral persistence."
