John Gilman a fter nine generations of winemakers in the family, Tim Frohlich brought things to a whole new level when he took control of the family's Schäfer-Fröhlich winery in 1995. Extremely low yields, strict selection in the vineyards and pushing the fruit to optimal ripeness were only the start. What followed were a number of smart acquisitions in some of the best vineyards in the region, which doubled the family's original holdings. Tim went on to become a terroir fanatic, developing the best methods to extract the perfect expression of fruit from each of his six Grosses Gewachs classified vineyards. The top wines are truly stunning examples of bone-dry Riesling, with the capacity to age for decades, but the real value of this house can be found in Tim's Kabinett, Spatlese and Trocken wines. ✦ Schafer- f rohlich Trocken v ulkangestein 2015 JG 91+ » $36 "The bouquet jumps from the glass...deep, fullish, pure on the attack and rock solid at the core...A complete and very classy wine."
