With little to no experience, Charles Smith found himself starting his own brand in 2001. It was passion which drove him and ended him up in Washington's Walla Walla. With a willingness to break every mold and declassify anything but the best juice down to table wine, his single-vineyard bottlings now stand tall as some of the highest-scoring wines made in the U.S. To think that this all happened over the course of a decade and without formal training is amazing in itself. Having tasted through the top-shelf and highly-allocated wines of the portfolio, we were truly floored by the performance of his 2013 Moxee Chardonnay. The Moxee is produced from old-vine chardonnay located on the north eastern edge of the Yakima valley. This cool climate site of pure limestone produces fruit of incredible depth and intensity, ideal for creating Washington state's greatest white wine. ✦ Charles Smith Chardonnay Sixto Moxee 2013 JD 94 » $59 "Another incredible white...Chablis-like...Showing a terrific mix of both cool and warm-climate characteristics..." (1753231) World c lass in Washing T on sT a T e b en Smith of Cadence Winery has been winning praise from critics for many years, and all you need to do is taste to understand why. His goal is to make a refined, structured and site-transparent Bordeaux blend from each of his vineyards on Red Mountain. Oak is used at a minimum, preferring to let the fruit speak for itself. In its youth, the Bel Canto is primary and rich (difficult to keep your hands off of), but it's in the cellar where you truly realize the potential here. Cadence is proof positive that Washington State is making world-class wine. It is highly recommended. ✦ Cadence Cabernet Sauvignon Bel Canto Cara v ineyard 2012 JD 95 » $59 "...a complex, perfumed style...it's full-bodied, concentrated and structured...yet has perfect balance and a great texture. Few in the US are doing Cabernet Franc better this." (1712133)
