Through it all, the timeless wineries of Mount Eden and Ridge continue to hold their own against an onslaught of new arrivals. But the word is out, and these high-altitude sites, with a mix of complex soil and exposures, are the perfect places to grow Pinot Noir, Cabernet, and Chardonnay of serious potential. Lioco was created by Matt Licklider and Kevin O'Connor, two professionals in the trade who shared a love for Burgundy, Piedmont, and the Rhone. However, what they saw coming out of California at the time didn't impress them. What did impress them was the diverse terroir and potential of California's cool- climate vineyards. Ten years later, and Lioco has now arrived in the Santa Cruz Mountains, which should come as no surprise, as the future of California Pinot Noir seems to be assured here. The Saveria vineyard sits on a valley floor and benefits from the maritime influences of the Pacific Ocean.
