He is also a die- hard believer in the benefits of whole-cluster fermentation and a minimalist philosophy, which allows each wine to express its potential through its own natural endowments. In 2014, Jamie turned out a lineup of fruit-intense Pinots of amazing muscularity and class. Yet we believe it is the McDougall Ranch that came out ahead of the pack. At an elevation over 935 feet above sea level, and managed by the renowned Ulises Valdez, McDougall Ranch produces fruit of remarkable intensity and depth. The result is a dark, elegant and complex wine, yet poised like a clenched fist, and showing all the natural beauty of its cool-climate origins. ✦ Kutch Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch 2014 AG 93 » $68 "...The richest and most intense of these four Pinots...The McDougall is the most satisfying of the Kutch 2014 single- vineyard Pinots..." (1705284) a Force T o be r eckoned Wi T h a ll it takes is one tilt of the glass to realize what winemakers Sashi Moorman and Rajat Parr have accomplished here—this is nothing short of the new- world Burgundy. Located in the Santa Rita Hills, and using the same vineyards originally founded by the Evening Land project, Domaine de La Cote have officially established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. The 2014 Domaine de la Cote Bloom's Field hails from a small vineyard with a view of the Pacific Ocean. The marine influences, wind and fog provide the perfect micro-terroir and long growing season necessary to produce fruit of layered depth and aromatics. Whole cluster fermentation adds textural lift and verve, while an aging period of 20-months in barrel (20% new) lends further complexity and balance. As beautiful as the Bloom's Field is today, it's sure to get even better over the next decade. ✦ Domaine de la Cote Pinot Noir Bloom's f ield Santa Rita Hills 2014 AG 93 » $74 "...`Terrific. All the elements come together effortlessly...lifted and translucent, as these wines always are..." (1705323)
