The village is famed for its production of exuberant Pinot Noir and Meunier- based Champagne, and even a small amount of still red wines. Within Cumieres, the grower-turned-winemaker that everyone knows is Rene Geoffroy, whose vine-growing roots go back to the 17th century. Today it's Rene's son, Jean-Baptiste, who oversees the organic farming and production of their thirty- two acres of vines. This is red wine country before anything else, and because of this, Jean-Baptiste insists on a Burgundian approach. Berries are sorted by hand in the vineyards to assure that only the best fruit makes it to the winery. From there, the wines are fermented in large oak barrels, which adds texture while retaining precision and tension. ✦ Rene Geoffroy Champagne 1er Cru e xpression Brut WS 92 » $43 "Bright and elegant, this well-knit, aperitif-style Champagne offers lively acidity and a fine bead, with floral overtones and a focused palate of poached pear, chalk, candied kumquat and passion fruit. Saline-tinged finish." (1854017) e nvy o F The r egion a s the grower movement gained velocity the many names of new estates became almost impossible to manage. In the end the proof can be found in the bottle, and the house of Pierre Gimonnet has proven themselves worthy of being considered one of the top houses in all of Champagne. Located in Cuis, within the Côte des Blancs, the Gimonnet family established itself as far back as the 18th century as one of the top growers in the region. Their enviable holdings in the Grand Crus of Cramant and Chouilly are just a small part of the formula that has brought success to this family. The true success comes from Olivier and Didier Gimonnet, who have continued to use their Grand Cru materials to balance out the entire range, making each Champagne from Pierre Gimonnet truly special from top to bottom. ✦ Pierre Gimonnet et f ils Champagne Rosé 1er Cru Rosé de Blancs JR 92 » $47 "...High-pitched, mineral-laced aromas of redcurrant and strawberry, with sexy floral and Asian spice notes building... Closes precise and very long, with impressive vivacity..." (1910441)
