His dream was to create a dynasty of greatness in Napa Valley and produce a wine that he could be proud of and a winery that he could one day leave to his children. And so, on his 55 acres of rocky volcanic, red Oakville soils, Leslie decided to plant a mix of Bordeaux varieties. Twenty years later, Rudd Oakville Estate is still their flagship wine. Made from small yields of 100% estate grown fruit, each of the Bordeaux varieties are picked at ideal ripeness, sorted by hand and vinified separately before being evaluated for use. Only the very best makes the cut. ✦ Rudd Oakville e state Proprietary Red Napa 2010 RP 94 » $199 "...full-bodied, seriously endowed, beautifully pure...noble wine." (1703141) The i naugural r elease c hristian Moueix is the driving force behind Dominus, as well as his life's work with La Fleur Pétrus and Trotanoy in Bordeaux. He is a man in search of perfection, one who was unwilling to rest on past laurels. Christian has now turned to a new location to create Ulysses. The principals remain the same, as he already pioneered one icon wine of Napa. It's a focus on each individual vine, no irrigation, and sparing no expense. Located about a mile north of Napanook in Oakville, the vineyards for Ulysses were purchased eight years ago and over that time Christian has been working to perfect them for the first release. That time is now. ✦ Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2012 JS 97 » $175 "...the estate is Ulysses and the wine it is producing is fabulous." (1704321) Thro W c au T ion T o T he Wind c ast away your preconceptions about Merlot, and allow us to introduce you to one of the best wines being made in California today. Founded in 1996 by Fritz Hatton and John Kongsgaard, Arietta has been slowly building momentum with a killer lineup of cool-climate inspired bordeaux varieties. The addition of famed winemaker Andy Erickson certainly didn't hurt either. Made only in the best vintages, and using old-vine fruit from the renowned Hudson Ranch in Carneros, Andy is now making one of the most highly- regarded Merlots in the region. ✦ Arietta Merlot Hudson v ineyards Napa 2013 AG 96 » $79 "...Deep, rich and unctuous, yet impeccably balanced throughout, the 2013 is a real head-turner."
