He was convinced that its unique soils, high altitudes and volatile atmosphere would be capable of producing a wine like no other made in Italy. Through Passopisciaro, this vision was made into reality. The Sciara Nuova is produced from ancient vines at altitudes up to 900 meters, from a vineyard that is drenched by the heat of the Sicilian sun throughout the entire day. The push and pull of atmospheric stress creates fruit of immeasurable depth and intensity—yet the wines show brilliance and purity. Passopisciaro is an experience you will never forget. Passopisciaro Contrada Sciara Nuova 2013 i G 94 » $70 "...Deep, rich aromas of red cherry, licorice, fennel and minerals... then richer and smoother on the palate, with ripe but fresh red cherry and raspberry flavors complicated by minerals and fresh herbs..." (1528047) s icily's Favori T e d augh T er F or decades, the wines of Sicily were shipped north to be blended with Italy's big reds in an attempt to add a level of depth and fruit that was not always possible before the days of global warming. Only a small number of producers saw the potential the Island was capable of. In 1990, the COS winery began to bottle and export Sicilian wine, setting a new standard and raising expectations. They were pioneers, and from these beginnings, a small girl named Arianna, the daughter of one of the COS founders, Giusto Occhipinti, began to dream of the future. Those dreams were later realized when she created Occhipinti. With the lineage of one of Sicily's largest and most successful wineries behind her, Arianna decided to go her own way and do it all herself. Through a totally natural and non- interventionist approach, she accomplished something no one else seemed capable of—creating widely-accepted and authentic Sicilian wines that speak of terroir above all else. The Occhipinti Frappato is Sicily personified. ✦ Occhipinti f rappato i GT Sicilia Rosso 2014 ML 93 » $42 "More than any other wine, this vintage and this producer can claim to have produced something close to a Pinot Nero with an all-Sicilian soul."
