T he wine-buying public has fallen back in love with the pure fruit and mineral-driven style of Chardonnay, which California can do so well. No longer are consumers searching for the buttery giants that filled shelves throughout the last two decades. Instead, it's now about purity, cool climates, unique soil types, and a hands-off approach in the winery. ✦ redeFining balance CAlIFORNIA At Sandhi Wines, balance is the guiding force. Founded in 2010 as a collaboration between Charles Banks, Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman, Sandhi quickly established itself as one of the top producers of cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California. Their vineyard sources in Santa Barbara County contain some of the oldest vines in the region. They hail from north-facing exposures with cooling ocean winds, which ensures a long and characterful growing season. In the cellar, the goal is to take nothing away; using wild yeast fermentations and an oak regiment that promotes transparency of site, while instilling a truly Burgundian quality to the wines. These are some of the most inspired Chardonnays being made in California today. The 'New' California Chardonnay is here, and if you haven't already experienced this evolution, now is the time. Sandhi Chardonnay Santa Barbara 2012 wA 90 » $37 "...A classic Chardonnay that offers notions of stone fruits, spice, white flowers and tinges of brioche to go with a medium-bodied, juicy, lively and clean profile...I love the purity here, and this is an excellent value..."
