Many have tried to recreate the magic that Pax Mahle was able to siphon from these hollowed grounds, and failed. Griffin's Lair sits on one of most ideal locations, on the Sonoma coast, for growing Syrah of intensity with undeniable character. The 2011 Griffin's Lair shows remarkable varietal character with perfect poise and polish, which sets it apart from the competition. The wines show the textural density and intense fruit that Booker is known for, yet there's a noticeable increase in purity and balance, which has pushed the envelope beyond what anyone thought possible. The 2012 Booker RLF is the real standout. Not for the faint of heart, Alban has demonstrated over the last twenty years that California is capable of producing Rhone-styled wines of intensity, yet also longevity and impeccable balance. Patrina is a 100% varietal Syrah, which is sourced from the younger vines found throughout Alban's estate vineyards. Think of Patrina as John's grateful nod to Alban fans.
