Having taken over the winery in 1976, Paolo admits to his experience as being one of constant evolution, and Cepparello is a perfect example. Essentially a "Super" Chianti Classico, it has recently been hailed as one of the greatest expressions of Sangiovese from Tuscany today—easily competing with its neighbors in Montalcino. In 2012, Paolo de Marchi has produced one of the most riveting expressions of Cepparello that we have ever encountered. As Antonio Galloni recently stated about Isole e Olena, "...some of the greatest wines being made anywhere in the world." ✦ isole e olena Cepparello Toscana 2012 AG 97 » $80 "The 2012 Cepparello is magnificent. Radiant, pliant and super- expressive...offers magnificent intensity...the 2012 is superb." (1555100) Thriving againsT all odds F or decades, Gianfranco Soldera had sat comfortably at the top of the Brunello di Montalcino pyramid. His belief in Sangiovese's eminence and the use of biodynamics guided the region, as well as other winemakers from around Italy, who would travel to his Case Basse estate to learn from the master. Even though his beliefs often landed him in heated scandal, through it all, Soldera endured. However, in 2012, an act of vandalism destroyed the bulk of his production from the 2007 through 2012 vintage, leaving only a small number of barrels reserved for the topping off of larger casks. Many believed Soldera had finally found a challenge that he couldn't overcome, and yet, here we are today with the exceedingly rare, 2008 Soldera Case Basse. No longer named a Brunello di Montalcino, as Soldera has backed out of the Consortium, feeling that the true tradition of Brunello has been lost. This makes Soldera's Case Basse the most exceptional, traditionally-styled and rarest of all Brunello, even though it is now considered a Super Tuscan. ✦ Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera 2008 AG 97 » $500 "...A more classic Soldera style...Readers lucky enough to find the 2008 are in for a thrill."
