Through the last 25 years, the Cogno family has been fine-tuning and learning the intricacies of the Ravera vineyard. Coupled with the rise in temperatures due to global warming, and the sudden growth in popularity over Ravera, what we are now seeing is some much-deserved attention for the Cogno winery. Cogno's late-release Barolo Bricco Pernice comes from a parcel within Ravera, which runs parallel to the vines of Vietti. The Bricco Pernice sees a traditional treatment of long macerations, aging in large Slavonian oak casks and then a further resting for 18 months in bottle before release. It is a gorgeous example of traditionally-styled Barolo from one of the top vineyards in the region, and with only a little over 400 cases produced, it is sure to disappear quickly. ✦ elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice 2010 AG 96+ » $98 "Intense, soaring aromatics, nuanced fruit and silky tannins... Translucent and regal in the glass, the 2010 is all about finesse. At the same time, there is plenty of acidity and tannin lurking in the background..." (1550176) under The r adar T he brothers Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino have been working to establish their name since 1998 when Alessandro left the Bartolo Mascarello winery where he had been the vineyard manager for 20-years—that's right, Bartolo Mascarello. Not only does A&G Fantino follow the same strict traditional style of their Mascarello roots, but they also have access to some of the oldest vines in Barolo today. Sourced from their eight hectares in the Dardi section of the Bussia cru, Alessandro and Gian Natale tend to vines that were planted in 1946 from a parcel with a perfect south-to-southeastern exposure. A&G Fantino Vigna dei Dardi, belongs in the cellar of any fan of traditionally-styled Barolo, and the 2010 represents one of the best vintages of the last 25 years. ✦ Alessandro e Gian natale fantino Barolo vigna dei dardi 2010 AG 93 » $57 "Dark, rich and ample...superb depth and pure texture...notes typical of Dardi open up beautifully...super-classic Barolo."
