52 M arie and Francois Giraud took the reins from their parents in 2001 with the help of family friend Philippe Cambie. With ancient vines in La Crau, Les Terres Blanches, Les Galimardes and Pignan (adjacent to Rayas), they are now considered one of the top producers of Chateauneuf du Pape. The Tradition is a classic blend of 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre from vines that average 70-years old. The Grenache and Mourvedre are aged in enamel- lined concrete, while the Syrah spends time in neutral oak vats. This has a lot to do with the grip and drive you feel on the palate when tasting the Tradition. Giraud's prestige wine, Grenaches de Pierre is a 100% varietal Grenache from the lieux-dits of La Crau and Pignan. Aged solely in concrete vats, it emerges as a gorgeous expression of pure Grenache and Rhone terroir. ✦ domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition 2012 JR 91 » $59 "...Fleshy, broad and seamless...Shows very good depth, breadth and power on the clinging finish, with a hint of garrigue coming on late." (1413013) domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Grenaches de Pierre 2012 JR 93 » $125 "...Fragrant, mineral-laced scents...Taut, focused and spicy on entry, then fleshier and weightier in the mid-palate...Closes gently tannic and very long, with resonating minerality and spiciness." (1413015) In the grand scheme of the Southern Rhone Domaine Giraud is a relatively new estate, yet they have already left their mark. The neW guard SOUTHERN RHONE
