Under the visionary direction of Jean- Luc Zuger, and with Michel Rolland consulting, this property is clearly a rising star in the appellation. Their high-density vineyard is planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot in primarily gravel, chalk and clay soils. The winemaking is progressive and often changes to best express the vintage. In general, Malescot Saint Exupery is a rich and intense style of Margaux, yet with tremendous balance and energy. The 2005 is considered a masterpiece, with decades of potential ahead of it and at a price that is unbelievable at this level. ✦ Malescot Saint exupery Margaux 2005 RP 97 » $164 "This estate's finest effort ever, the 2005 Malescot St.-Exupery should be sought out by readers looking for intensity combined with superb richness...It should only get better over the next decade..." (1005152) progessive by naTure s ince buying Pape Clément in 1990, Bordeaux wine entrepreneur Bernard Magrez has invested heavily in the vineyard and winery. With a soil composition so similar to that of Haut Brion and La Mission, he felt that Pape Clement should strive to be their equal. Though an unabashed modernist, Magrez continues to employ traditional methods when it suits him: whole berry fermentation, wooden vats, manual punching down, and month-long maceration. Whatever the techniques may be, the resulting wines are stunning, showing great depth and complexity, abundant fruit and great balance. These are timeless wines to be enjoyed over decades. ✦ Pape Clément Pessac-leognan 2005 RP 98 » $200 "Probably the greatest Pape-Clement ever made...sumptuous notes of smoky scorched earth, graphite, melted licorice, and blackberries...full body, extraordinary concentration..." (124541) Also Available from our Cellar: Pape Clément Pessac-leognan 2007 RP 92 » $135 "One of the stars of the vintage...impressively endowed." (124466) BORDEAUx
