The closest we've come to an answer is, terroir. A piece of earth in the right hands can produce a wine of such depth and intricacies that it will be hunted for no matter what the cost. Within Burgundy, there is no name more widely recognized than that of Domaine de la Romanée Conti, otherwise known as DRC. With a history going back almost 800 years, DRC's initial fame came from the hallowed vineyard known as Romanée Conti, from which they have produced the worlds most expensive, sought after, and often counterfeited wine. However, it's from their seven other Grand Cru vineyards where we find the true prestige of DRC's holdings and their winemaking prowess. It's not often that we think beyond bottles such as these, but what you'll find is a strict following of biodynamic principals, severely low yields and some of the latest harvests in the region. Of DRC's Grand Crus, it's Richebourg that is known for its intensity and weight, contrasted by transparency of pure Pinot fruit. It's a wine for the ages and rare beyond belief. Finding these in the market isn't impossible, but finding them with over 20 years of perfect maturity is certainly no easy task—until now. ✦ domaine de la Romanee Conti Richebourg 1993 BH 93 » $1950 "...Elegance, purity and impressive complexity. The firm middle weight plus flavors are detailed, minerally, powerful and beautifully focused, all wrapped in a lingering finish of superb length. This is classy juice..." (1306578) a sense oF place Burgundy is all about a sense of place. Nowhere else in the world do we see vineyards so widely dissected by each individual row, or walled of to mark their importance.
