The wines here don't follow the typical paradigm of German Riesling; instead Florian chooses to mix a little bit of the old school with the new and create a style all his own. The wines are precise, crisp and teeming with acid-driven minerality. Much of this has to do with the steep inclines, rocky slate soil and cool growing conditions of the family's vineyards. Lauer Rieslings aren't intended for casual sipping, as they are intense, layered and thought-provoking wines of sheer energy. Each are worthy of a long decant or placing in the cellar, and belong on the short-list of any Riesling collector. ✦ PeTeR lAUeR RieSlinG press bottle fass 11 Schonfels GG 2013 (1660168) wA 93+ $58 Kupp fass 18 GG 2013 (1660167) wA 94 $53 The neW MasTers oF Mosel M ore often than not, a great producer's qualifications are equated to the generations that came before them. However, in Germany's Mosel, it's Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler who, after only ten years of experience, are now considered one of region's top producers. Weiser-Kunstler farms some of the best sites in the Mosel. These terraced vineyards, which were once renowned throughout the region yet had fallen into obscurity, are home to ungrafted, old-vine Riesling of tremendous potential. Much of the success at Weiser-Kunstler has to do with their intense passion for the land and insistence on overseeing every aspect in both the vineyard and the cellar. Weiser-Kunstler is the name to watch for in the Mosel, because with quality this high and production numbers this small, it's only so long before these wines become impossible to find. ✦ Weiser-Kunstler riesling 2014 bottle Gaispfad Kabinett Trocken (1660201) $25 Riesling Mosel (1660200) $21 ellergrub Kabinett (1660202) $30 Spatlese ellergrub (1661028) $39
