H igh heat and low precipitation doesn't usually equal a great wine, yet in the case of the 2013 Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard, it certainly did. In the hands of Joey Tensley, nature's adversity was exactly what he needed to realize greatness. The 2013 Tensley Syrah struck a serious chord with critics all around—not a usual occurrence in the world of wine. Antonio Galloni calls it "A wine of remarkable depth and purity..." If you love Syrah from California or the Rhone, you owe it to yourself to check out the 2013 Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon. ✦ Tensley Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard Santa Barbara 2013 $49 per bottle "The largest-scaled Colson Canyon to date...This got a big "Wow "...lively and elegant." WA 94–97 (1712028) dO yOu knOW lucia? Y ou should, because Lucia is the label used by the Pisoni family for all wines which are not made from the Pisoni vineyard itself. The 2012 Lucia Syrah Soberanes is a very special wine, hitting well above its price point. In 2012, Syrah was the clear winner throughout the Santa Lucia Highlands, with a near-perfect growing season and a last-minute heat spike in September, which pushed the grapes to perfect ripeness. The quality of the fruit lent well to whole cluster fermentation which added layers of dimension, textures and exotic complexities. ✦ Lucia Syrah Soberanes Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands 2012 $55 per bottle "A stunning, pulsating wine, the 2012 impresses for its nuance and overall harmony...The purity of the fruit here is simply striking..." It's from the Central Coast that we now see a new generation of Californian wines which can compete on the world scene while remaining a tremendous value-- and Eric Jenson of Booker Vineyards is doing just that. The 2012 Booker RLF delivers Rhone complexities of earth and herbs married to the brilliant, ripe fruit of the San Luis Obispo AVA. Booker may be known for massive wines of intense power in the past, yet the RLF was specifically created with balance in mind, and the results are stunning. ✦ Booker RLF Grenache/Syrah Paso Robles 2012 $55 per bottle "Tasting like a high-quality Chateauneuf du Pape...full-bodied, silky and sexy wine that has impeccable balance..."
