Old vines from north-facing vineyards are used with windy exposures to assure a long, characterful growing season. In the cellar, the goal is to take nothing away; using wild yeasts and whole cluster fermentation, followed by aging in neutral oak. These are complex, textural wines of pure Pinot fruit. ✦ SANDHI PINOT NOIR rating bottle "Amrita" Wenzlau Vineyard Santa Rita Hills 2012 (1705094) AG 93 $49 La Cote Vineyard Santa Rita Hills 2012 (1705122) WA 95 $95 Rinconada Santa Rita Hills 2012 (1705111) WA 94 $65 Sanford and Benedict Vineyard Santa Rita Hills 2012 (1705121) WA 93+ $70 Tyler Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 2012 $39 per bottle Justin Willett began producing wines at Tyler since 2005, and it wasn't long before his Pinot Noir started receiving serious attention. His motto, "Modern Thinking with a Classic Approach," applies more to his forward thinking than what he uses in the winery. In fact, the winemaking style is heavily inf luenced by Burgundy. Justin works with some of the oldest vineyard blocks in the County with the goal of creating sight-specific Pinot Noir of purity and intensity, defined by their precision and nuance. "...A fresh and vibrant 2012 that gives up pretty red and black fruits, sappy flower and underbrush-styled aromas and flavors..." WA 92 (1705157) Wind Gap Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2012 $39 per bottle Pax Mahle shows the diversity of his winemaker prowess with Wind Gap Pinot Noir. Being well established for his remarkable success with PA X Syrah, Mahle has created a polarizing wine of intensity. His focus at Wind Gap is all about cool-climate Pinot of elegance and class. Made with a high percentage of whole clusters and aged predominantly in neutral oak, these wines emerge as stunning examples of what Pinot is capable of on the Sonoma coast—as well as being an exceptional value. "...boasts terrific intensity, breadth and richness. This is a gorgeous..." AG 91 (1705107) Dumol Pinot Noir Estate Russian River Valley 2012 $120 per bottle With famed winemaker Andy Smith leading the charge, it 's no surprise to see the excitement over Dumol Pinot Noir. The style here is bent toward dark, rich Pinot fruit, contrasted by exceptional balance with depths of forest f loor and earthy characteristics. Dumol is still considered an under-the-radar producer—but that won't last for long. "A fragrant perfume of black and blue fruits, tree bark, truff les, roasted herbs and subtle charcoal embers emerges from this broodingly rich, intense, full-bodied, concentrated yet still youthful Pinot Noir..."
