Yet this is all happening for a very good reason, namely that Mayacamas is one of the most iconic estates in Napa Valley, with a legacy of producing some of the most compelling and age-worthy wines we will ever see from their Mount Veeder vineyards. Thomas Banks jumped at the opportunity to purchase and revitalize this historic property. These are classic Napa Valley Cabs which recall a time when Napa was fighting to outclass Bordeaux and ultimately won. Each of these bottlings is like a piece of history, and to taste them is to understand both the past and the bright future of Napa Valley. ✦ MAyACAMAS vINEyARDS CABERNET SAUvIGNON NAPA vALLEy rating bottle 1988 (1704098) AG 97 $375 1998 (1704059) AG 93 $189 1999 (1704161) AG 94 $225 2002 (1704162) AG 94 $199 Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 $124 per bottle It 's not often that esteemed wine critic Antonio Galloni is at a loss for words, yet on the 2012 Arietta Cabernet, he was just that, ultimately saying, "there is so much going on in the glass that words prove superficial...Majestic." This is no surprise with winemaker Andy Erickson leading the charge with cooler-climate, Napa Valley fruit. The Arietta is a highly aromatic, classically-styled Cabernet. "This is a fabulous showing from top to bottom." AG 96+ (1703076) Collina Dalla Valle Red Blend Napa Valley 2011 $119 per bottle The Collina Dalla Valle may be the "second" wine from Dalla Valle, made from the younger vines on their hillside blocks; however, it has earned the respect of critics and consumers alike. Often scoring high and said to be only a small step below the estate Cabernet Sauvignon. For the consumer, this equates to tremendous value, especially with Andy Erickson (formally of Screaming Eagle) crafting the wines. "...A powerful, vibrant wine loaded with pure class and personality..." AG 93 (1703035) Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard Napa Valley 2005 $180 per bottle As the landscape in Napa Valley changes, consumers and winemakers are now looking back to the classics for inspiration. Back to Cabernet Sauvignon with structure and soul, to complement its ripe Napa fruit; wines that can be enjoyed with a meal or mature in the cellar for decades. Yet as most wineries work to conform to this style, Heitz Martha's Vineyard never strayed in the first place. A venerable classic and the archetype of what Napa Valley producers strive to recreate today. "Minty bay leaf aromas are pure, with a spicy edge, leading to firm dark berry, mocha, mineral and sage f lavors.." WS 93 (1704075) culT califORnia
