Almirez is created first in the vineyard, using a minimalist approach and sourcing the Tinto de Toro grape from high- altitude, pre-phylloxera vines which are up to 65 years old. After fermentation with naturally-occurring yeasts, it is then aged for one year in French oak (only 30% new). The resulting wine is stunning, emerging as an example of generosity, depth and precision. ✦ Teso La Monja Almirez 2012 $27 per bottle "The 2012 Almirez (a 1,000-case cuvée of 100% Tinta de Toro) was aged 14 months in French oak. This sensational wine comes from vines planted between 1949 and 1999. Yields were a conservative 1.8 tons of fruit per acre. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas of camphor, ground pepper, blackberries and cassis. This full-bodied, Northern R hône Valley-like Spanish red exhibits meaty/lard notes, terrific density and purity, and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds. It should drink nicely for a decade or more." WA 93 (1633015) WineMaking in The exTReMe t he 'second' wine from the famed Mas Alta estate, Artigas is produced from 10- to 30-year old vines and aged for 18 months in barrel before being bottled. At any other address, this could be labeled as a reserve wine and held to sell at twice the price. However, for Mas Alta, it's more about introducing the consumer to the intensity of Priorat, at a price that won't break the bank. ✦ Mas Alta Artigas Priorat 2011 $25 per bottle "(70% garnacha, 25% carinena and 5% cabernet sauvignon; aged for 16 months in small French oak): Opaque ruby. Powerful cherry and cassis aromas are brightened by smoky mineral and f loral qualities. Fresh dark berry f lavors are pleasantly bitter and surprisingly lithe, with a licorice note adding interest. Gains sweetness and weight on the finish, with the dark berry and mineral notes echoing. " JR 90 (1641600)
