A Bordeaux blend first, yet with roots deep in Tuscan character, Ornellaia now produces one of the top wines in Italy, vintage after vintage. This has much to do with winemaker Axel Heinz, with his strict selection in the vineyard and the cellar, assuring that only the highest quality fruit makes it into the final blend. What's more, the composition of Ornellaia can change drastically from year to year in order to produce the absolute finest wine possible. The highly rated 2010 garnered considerable praise. However, it's the 2011 which Axel believes will go down as one of the greatest vintages of Ornellaia to date. 2011 was considered a warm year for the Tuscan coast, leading up to an early harvest, yet the resulting concentration and regal tannic structure firmly places it as a classic in the making. Axel compares the 2011 to three of Ornellaia's most highly celebrated vintages, namely 2001, 2004 and 2006. With this pedigree, quality, and proven aging potential, the 2011 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Rosso is sure to be a classic. ✦ Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri 2011 $216 per bottle "...seamless wine endowed with stunning depth...sure to provide many stages of pleasure over the next 20+ years." AG 97 (1559233) MaRchesi anTinORi TignanellO t ignanello doesn't require much of an introduction—it was the wine which defined the Tuscan landscape and started its own winemaking revolution decades ago. The Chianti Classico and Super Tuscans we love and enjoy today owe their very existence to the Antinori family and Tignanello. As I watch the prices and quality levels rise in Tuscany, I'm reminded that Tignanello was there before them all. It's often disregarded by the "serious" Chianti aficionado because of its branding and production numbers—but make no mistake, Tignanello is as serious as Tuscan wines come. In 2011, Tignanello takes the warmth of the vintage in strides. The ripe fruit is further accentuated by its streamlined acidity, keeping this wine intense and racy from start to finish. Today, the 2011 Tignanello pleases for its sheer, seductive personality and strength, yet beneath this well-polished exterior is a structured wine of pure class. For those of you who have the strength to squirrel away a few bottles in the cellar, the future will be very bright. ✦ Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 2011 $99 per bottle "Kirsch, rose petal, pomegranate, exotic spices and mint are woven together in a fabric of notable class...endowed with magnificent complexity, nuance and class. The silky, polished finish makes the 2011 incredibly appealing today, but the wines from this site have always aged very well...I can't wait to see how the 2011 ages."
