A blend of 25% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 25% Syrah and the remaining 25% a mix of other Rhone varieties. This is what Chateauneuf du Pape used to be about. ✦ Xavier Vignon Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Anonyme 2009 $50 per bottle "...Its opaque purple color is followed by a wine of extraordinary intensity. Copious notes of licorice, garrigue, underbrush, blackberries, black currants and graphite are present in this full-bodied, modern- styled, fragrant, distinctive Chateauneuf. This terrific, voluptuous 2009 should drink well young and last for 15-20 years." RP 96 (1413024) "undeniably classic" C hateau de Beaucastel remains one of the few producers who choose to blend all 13 permitted grape varieties for a traditional style Chateauneuf du Pape. Beaucastel stands out in every vintage for its textbook Southern Rhone qualities, with both youthful appeal today and potential for the cellar. ✦ Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 2011 $75 per bottle "Reminiscent of a lighter weight 2009, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape offers up a sweet bouquet of spiced black cherries, plum, truff le, saddle leather and underbrush. Coming from tiny yields (which were down 50% from 2010), this medium to full-bodied 2011 is gorgeously textured and has solid mid-palate depth, terrific purity of fruit and ripe tannin. Relatively approachable and enjoyable even now, it should nevertheless evolve gracefully for 15-20 years." WA 94 (1413027) SOuTHeRn RHOne
