It's not the average person who appreciates the fruits of the northern Rhone, for there seems very little in the way of fruit at all when f rst approached. These are wines of the earth, with pure animal magnetism. If Burgundy is the elegant royalty of French wine, then the northern Rhone is the war-hardened general. Nowhere else does a wine speak so much of the savory side of Syrah. It's only after time – in the glass, or aged in bottle -- that the complex notes of dark fruit come forward, complemented by hints of charred meat, animal musk, and intense minerality. Yet with such a limited production, the northern Rhone may be one of the most exclusive wine producing regions on earth. nORTheRn RhOne s ince the 2010 vintage, one can safely attest that Jaboulet is back on top as one of the Rhone's leading producers. With La Chapelle, one of the legendary sites at the steepest part of the Hermitage hill, and the new leadership of Caroline Frey, Jaboulet has brought this historic site back to producing iconic wines destined to be legends. Jaboulet's La Chapelle also stands out as one of the smartest buys of the region. With wines from Chave, Chapoutier, Guigal and Delas all selling for $200 or more, it's a tremendous value. ✦ Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage La Chapelle 2012 $165 per bottle "...A blockbuster...Full-bodied, deep, layered and incredibly concentrated...It will have 2-3 decades of overall prime drinking, and certainly evolve for longer."
