xxx 86 | MORRELL FINE WINE AND SPIRITS V ISIT u S AT MORRELLWINE .c OM cALL 800.96.WINES (800.969.4637) G uido is a fourth-generation winemaker in the Serralunga township, who calls the l azzarito vineyard his home. l azzarito is a site that has slowly gained recognition through the work of v ietti, but outside of this powerhouse producer, the vineyard has lacked a champion. However, what most collectors have yet to realize is that Guido Porro is that champion, producing wine from parcels within l azzarito, and choosing to only label his Barolo with the name of the individual parcel–that name is Santa Caterina. The Santa Caterina is the signature expression of Guido Porro. l azzarito is a warm site, like much of Serralunga, and the Santa Caterina parcel benefits from being at the highest elevation within the vineyard. At 340-390 meters, these vines enjoy a windy southwest exposure, as their roots dig deep into soils of clay and limestone. It's a perfect storm of terroir that produces a wine of superior depth, focus, and minerality, with the potential to age for decades. ✦ Guido Porro Barolo Santa Caterina 2013 VM 94 » $49 "...A super-classic sense of structure and drive, the 2013 is another winner from Guido Porro…" Antonio Galloni (1558393) iN Need OF a C H a MP i ON N O L ONG e R The Guido Porro estate flies comfortably under the radar in Piedmont, not because of variable quality or lack of a prestigious cru to call their own. i nstead, Guido Porro flies under the radar because this hardline traditional producer isn't concerned so much with current trends or what critics are saying about his wines.
