Jerome was presented with the choice, to remove these ancient, heirloom varieties that made these wines wonderfully unique, or remove himself from the appellation–in a brave decision, he chose the latter. Today, Gourt de m autens continues to gain recognition as one of the premier cult wines of all the Southern Rhone villages, even though it only carries the classification of v aucluse. His traditional blend of Southern Rhone varieties mixed with a number of heirloom grapes from his biodynamically-farmed family vineyards began to gain international recognition, and the success of Gourt de Mautens seemed secured.
