70 | MORRELL FINE WINE AND SPIRITS V ISIT u S AT MORRELLWINE .c OM cALL 800.96.WINES (800.969.4637) R H o N e T H e M O de RN - d a Y Ma ST e RP ie C e T he traditional house of l e v ieux Donjon remains one of the most consistent values in the entire appellation of Châteauneuf du Pape. Since 1966, the estate has bottled its production in much the same way that it does today. In fact, the only changes to be found are a stricter attention to detail and further cleanliness in the winemaking process. As for the wines, they are through and through the old-school and age-worthy Donjon that we love. l e v ieux Donjon farms fourteen hectares of classic Rhone varieties within the vineyards of l e Piedlong and m ourrede Gaud. m any of these vines are 90-100 years old. It's from here that the Domaine produces its one red blend, refusing to divide their production into special cuvees. The blend, a mix of 75% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% m ourvedre and 5% Cinsault, is partially destemmed and both fermented and aged in foudres. In the perfect storm 2016 vintage, l e v ieux Donjon has created a modern-day masterpiece. ✦ Le Vieux d onjon Châteauneuf du Pape 2016 J d 98 » $65 "...unquestionably the greatest wine made from this estate to date...heavenly bouquet of blackcurrants, ground pepper, new saddle leather, garrigue...Deep, full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, yet with the purity, elegance, and finesse that makes this vintage so special..." Jeb Dunnuck (1413143) T H e Ta LK OF T H e T OWN i t was exciting news indeed, Guigal had officially purchased Domaine de Nalys and their vineyards in Châteauneuf du Pape. Domaine de Nalys was created in the 17th century, and saw significant growth and care in the hands of its previous owners. It was a property that Philippe Guigal had his eye on for quite some time, neighboring Château Rayas and with parcels in l a Crau, Bois de Sénéchal and Grand Pierre. This mix of prestigious terroir has allowed Domaine de Nalys to make an excellent Châteauneuf du Pape for decades now, yet in the hands of Guigal, the future is looking very bright. Plans include building a new winery with micro-vinification, custom tailored aging vessels, and going completely organic in the vineyards. What's more, a vine by vine approach will be adopted at harvest. In the end, we may be witnessing the beginnings of an entirely new selection of single vineyard prestige bottlings from Guigal. However, until that time comes, the Chateau de Nalys Grand v in will represent the best fruit that this new project has to offer–making it one of the top relative values from the Rhone today. ✦ Guigal Château de Nalys Châteauneuf du Pape 2016 $95 "...Intense, with plum and blackberry pâte de fruit notes mixed with anise and roasted apple wood. It has good integration and the racy edge of the vintage through the finish." James Molesworth (1413180)
