In the vineyards and the winery, we find l udovic Izerable, who married into the l ionnet family and their prized vineyards in 2003. For five centuries, generations of l ionnets farmed these lands, and l udovic was happy to carry on the torch. With holdings in the lieu-dits of m azards, Combes, Chaillot and Brugeres, l udovic works each parcel independently, parcels which average 40 - 100 year old vines. In the winery, it's a hands off approach, as he leaves the bunches intact, fermenting with native yeasts in concrete tank, before refining the wine in large-format, neutral oak barrels. Jeb Dunnuck (1416059) T H e C O u R a G e TO C H a NG e N OTH i NG T he days of finding a good quantity of Alain Graillot's Crozes Hermitage are slowly coming to an end, as this under-the-radar producer continues to gain favor with critics and consumers. Founded in 1985, Alain Graillot came to Crozes Hermitage with a love for the land and an affinity for red Burgundy. It was no mistake that the vineyards he chose had been farmed by hand and carefully attended to for decades. Alain continued this practice and decided to use only organic methods throughout his vineyards. In the winery, he preferred only whole-cluster fermentation and aging in 1-3-year-old barrels, obtained through some of the top houses in Burgundy. The end result was a robust Syrah of exuberance yet firmly rooted in the northern Rhone. As a result, Alain Graillot has become the most highly sought- after Crozes Hermitage in production today. The winemaking is now fully in the hands of Alain's son, m axime, who has chosen to change nothing.
