It was with this in mind that l ouis Barruol, together with Kermit l ynch, came up with a great idea. You may know the name l ouis Barruol from the iconic house of St. Cosme, where he (almost single-handedly) put Gigondas on the map. Now looking north, to the appellation of Côte Rôtie, l ouis worked to form contracts with small growers whose holdings were spread across a diverse mix of terroir within the greater appellation. e ach grower adheres to the strict principles and standards that l ouis uses throughout his own vineyards in Gigondas. o nce delivered to the winery, the grapes are fermented with stems intact in cement tanks, and they are then aged for 15 months in all neutral barrels–the results are stunning. These are both must-haves for the lover of the Northern Rhone and explorer of its terroir. ✦ Louis Barruol Cote-Rotie Vialliere (Cote Brune) 2014 WS 92 » $67 "This peppery red shows sage and bay leaf notes streaking through the bitter plum and crushed cherry fruit." Dried sage and savory accents that steadily give way to bitter cherry and damson plum… The long echo of dark fruit bodes well for the cellar." James Molesworth (1417049) T H e Hidde N Cô T e Rô T ie With the ever-increasing popularity of Northern Rhone, the focus of the larger houses and outside investors has been to buy up as many of the small pockets of remaining terroir as possible, to ultimately blend into their larger portfolios.
