In fact, one could argue that, along with a short list of other historic producers, Jaboulet set the benchmark for what Hermitage is today. Their parcels on these hallowed grounds are considered some of the best of the entire hill. However, the story of the modern-day Jaboulet, and their return to the limelight, really started only ten years ago, when the Frey family purchased the estate and slowly worked to introduce change. It started in the vineyard, with the introduction of biodynamic principles. It continued in the cellars, as o enologist and proprietor, Caroline Frey, alongside Winemaking Director, Jacques Desvernois, worked to fine-tune every process and set a standard for quality which few others could uphold. With one of the longest histories of wine production in the Rhone and holdings in nearly every appellation, the l allier- Deutz family of Delas could have rested on past laurels. Instead, they have become an integral part of the legacy that made these wines great and continue to improve upon it. In fact, with winemaker Jacques Grange at the helm, Delas may now making the best wines of their entire history. From the steep granitic soils of the Hermitage hill comes a wine from the Delas portfolio that over-delivers in every way: l es Bessards. l es Bessards displays the dark and animal nature of northern Rhone Syrah, fermented in traditional, open-topped concrete tanks and then refined in second pass oak for 12 - 14 months.
