This is far less common in Bordeaux, and that is what makes Clos de Sarpe so unique. l ocated just northeast of the village of St. e milion, the vines average in age from 60 to 75 years old. Ancient, by Bordeaux standards, the vines thrive in a unique terroir of clay over deep limestone and chalk. The end result is a m erlot-dominated, assuredly Right Bank Bordeaux that is a perfect model of terroir. Clos de Sarpe is an experience worth seeking out. Be warned, however, that there are only 1000 cases produced each year. ✦ Clos de Sarpe St. e milion 2000 W a 96 » $145 "... it absolutely fills the palate with sweet, rich, ripe fruit, supported by satiny tannins and oodles of freshness..." Lisa Perrotti-Brown (125052) Clos de Sarpe St. e milion 1990 W a 94 » $115 "...displays great richness and depth, with the long, compelling finish revealing a gustatory exercise in mineralogy." Lisa Perrotti-Brown (125038) T H e Li TTL e B ROTH e R OF La F i T e O ften mistakenly thought of as the "second wine" of Chateau l afite Rothschild, the vineyards of Duhart m ilon were acquired by the estate in 1962, and it didn't take long before Rothschild made significant improvements. From 1970 to 2000, the vineyards of Duhart m ilon nearly doubled in size. Next to come was the addition of a new wine making facility with modern equipment. By the time that the 2010 vintage arrived, the wines of Duhart m ilon had made a giant qualitative leap forward. l ocated in the north of Pauillac, on the western side of Chateau l afite Rothschild, the vineyards of Duhart m ilon now total 152 hectares, which are planted to 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% m erlot, making it one of the few Classified Bordeaux estates to only have two grape varieties within their vineyard. The naturally cooler, northern exposure of this location allows the grapes to mature slower and ripen later, while the gravel, sand and limestone soils lend a refreshing quality to the wine. The end result is one of the most balanced, yet deeply satisfying expressions of Pauillac terroir that you can find. ✦ d uhart Milon Pauillac 2010 W a 96 » $125 "... full-bodied mouthfeel with fabulous precision and density.. should drink beautifully for 30+ years." Robert Parker (1005510)
