The turning point was in the early nineties, with the addition of Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont. u ntil this time, the diverse terroir of this estate was never porperly expressed. Within the vineyards of Pavie m acquin, you will find nine unique soil types with varying percentages of limestone and clay. This was the realization that changed the estate forever, as a vine-by-vine system of management was employed, as well as organic practices. By the time the great 2005 vintage arrived, Pavie m acquin was perfectly positioned to create one of the year's top wines. Since that time, we have witnessed the upgrade of the Chateau to Premier Grand Cru Classe, a title that is well-deserved. It should come as no surprise that in 2015 they produced yet another wine of the vintage. The future looks very bright at Pavie m acquin. ✦ Pavie Macquin St. e milion 2015 VM 97 » $94 "One of the highlights of the vintage, the 2015 Pavie Macquin is positively stellar… vivid, head-spinning wine … Don't miss it!" Antonio Galloni (1005312) Beau C ai LLO u Rei M a G i N ed d ucru Beaucaillou is one of the oldest estates in all of Bordeaux, with a unique terroir, consisting of soils which are literally covered with large stones. The Borie family, who also own Grand Puy l acoste and Haut Batailley, took ownership of the Chateau and its vineyards in 1941. However, the best wines of this historic estate are being made today, much thanks to Bruno Borie, who took over in 2003 and has since been on a mission to improve quality across the board. Part of this rise in quality for the Grand v in was the result of creating four additional wines from their estate holdings. However, it's important to keep in mind that these are not necessarily "Second labels" as much as they are different expressions of terroir. From their vineyards that are further inland, close to Chateau Talbot, we are given l a Croix de Beaucaillou, a wine that struts the Borie style and personality, while delivering a youthful expression of elegance and harmony. When people talk about the value to be found in Bordeaux, here at m orrell, l a Croix de Beaucaillou is the first wine that comes to mind. ✦ La Croix de Beaucaillou St Julien 2015 JS 93 » $54 "Full-bodied, round and juicy with a solid backbone of tannins and focus...Polished." James Suckling (1246890)
