This started in 1920 with Sem d'Angerville, one of the first estate bottlers. Then came Jacques d'Angerville, a believer in terroir with an extreme minimalist approach that would seem commonplace today, but was unheard of in his day. Which brings us to modern times, as the Domaine operates under the watchful eye of Guillaume D'Angerville, who took over upon his father's death in 2003. o f their list of esteemed crus, it is the Clos des Ducs monopole that receives the most attention. However, it would be a huge mistake to miss out on the wine that is often overshadowed by Clos des Ducs, yet sets the standard for all of v olnay: Champans. Here we find vines averaging over 35 years old in one of the Domaine's largest holdings, allowing for a more stringent selection of fruit. Champans is located on the south side of the village, in the center of the village's Premier Crus. It's a wonderful terroir, one that produces a feminine, velvety, silky v olnay with a delicate structure. ✦ eL e G a NC e, P R e C i S i ON , Pu R i TY … C H a MP a NS Volnay often gets lost in the shuffle, which is such a shame. a s we search for the the Grand Crus and top Premier Crus of red Burgundy, the one region that we feel delivers the greatest experience at a fraction of the price is Volnay. That said, if you're drinking Volnay that's not from the Marquis d' a ngerville, then you are missing out on another level entirely.
