Through that time, the family acquired choice parcels throughout the village over three generations. Denis m ortet always saw himself as a farmer first, and introduced organic practices early by Burgundy standards, along with an emphasis on each individual terroir. Today the winery is run by his son Arnaud, along with the help of his mother, who is still closely tied to the family business. The m es Cinq Terroirs hails from five parcels in Gevrey- Chambertin. It's a blend that Arnaud feels creates the perfect expression of the village, bringing balance to the palate, while capturing the bouquet of their surroundings. By combining these five terroirs, with partial whole-cluster fermentation and a touch of new oak in the winery, the m es Cinq Terroirs emerges as a wine that delivers well above its status. ✦ d enis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs 2015 VM 91 » $89 "A splendid village wine with the density and depth to age." Stephen Tanzer (1307364) T H e S O u L OF Ge VR e Y O f all of the winemakers in Burgundy who have gained a cult-like following, it can be argued that no one is more deserving than Denis Bachelet. With only 4.28 hectares of vineyards to work with, literally 1 / 3 the size of the small-scale Rousseau, Bachelet has managed to extract a certain type of magic from each parcel. Denis produced his first vintage in 1981, but he didn't take full control of the winery until 1983, when he immediately set down a path that was not popular back then, but has become the norm today: an organic and non-interventionist approach in both the vineyards and winery. Granted, his parcels exist in some of the greatest vineyards of the region. For Denis, it's all about the transparency of Pinot Noir, which he culls from his old vines, planted in the 1930s, and used to produce the v ieilles v ignes. ✦ d enis Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2015 W a 91 » $135 "...This is just superb."
