When the Roman empire fell, winemaking traditions were carried on by m onks that spread throughout the region. In 1894, the Saahs family purchased the property, and they have maintained a role as guardians of ancient tradition ever since. To this day, the family has chosen to change very little, from the organic (and now biodynamic) farming of the vineyards down to the aging of wine in a cellar built over 700 years ago. e xtended wood aging and late releases define the style of Nikolaihof. These are wines that require our attention and reward those with an open mind. ✦ Nikolaihof Riesling Ried Steiner Hund 2013 W a 93+ » $74 "... a rich, ripe, pure, finessed and concentrated Riesling with great elegance and a very long and aromatic finish..." Stephan Reinhardt (1660272) a S TYL e aLL T H ei R O WN i n the 1970s, l eo Alzinger took control of his family's winery and decided to change the course of their production. Instead of selling the fruit of their labor to a local cooperative, the Alzinger family would begin to bottle their own Riesling and Grüner v eltliner. This decision placed Alzinger into a group of Austrian pioneer winemakers who, in turn, defined the region. Today, l eo Alzinger Jr. oversees winemaking, while his father continues to tend the vines of their esteemed parcels within the l oibenberg and l iebenberg vineyards. The style is one that thrives on clarity and precision contrasted by textural richness, employing a hands-off approach in the winery and aging in large neutral wood barrels. It's a style that's all their own, one which sets Alzinger apart in a region full of amazing producers, and has created a perfect storm of terroir, tradition and talent. ✦ a lzinger Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd 2016 W a 92 » $54 "...A pure, fresh, mineral, beautifully linear and finessed Riesling that reflects the cooler part of the Loibenberg... shows nice grip and salinity as well as the classic fruit concentration of a cooler vintage." Stephan Reinhardt (1660270)
