Franz Prager was among those growers, outlining the standards that would set them apart, and over time, returning Austrian wine to international renown. Today, the winery is run by Franz's daughter, Ilse, and her husband Toni, who worked through the '90s and up to this very day to elevate Prager to the highest echelon of Austrian wine producers. A trained biologist, geologist, and historian, Toni took an entirely new approach to bio- diversity and terroir, locating the perfect clone for each unique soil type and exposition. As a result, the Wachstum Bodenstein vineyard boasts 110 different clones, and the wines that Prager is now making are the best in the winery's entire history. ✦ Prager Riesling Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein 2015 W a 94 » $75 "... Displays great purity and coolish aromatics, but is incredibly intense and powerful… Great finish, round and balanced." Stephan Reinhardt (1660289) Prager Gruner Veltliner Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein 2013 VM 96 » $79 "Head-turningly high-toned floral and herbal essences and extract of almond and pistachio rise from the glass, then persist strikingly as billowing, expansive inner-mouth perfume..." David Schildknecht (1660288) F ROM R OCKS TO Wi N e The Prager winery has roots in the Wachau going back to 1715–a time when the region had obtained the highest level of prestige throughout the courts of e urope. However, a ustrian wine suffered a major blow in 1985 after a small number of greedy producers adulterated their wines, resulting in a number of deaths and a black mark on the country's production of wine.
