xxx 154 | MORRELL FINE WINE AND SPIRITS V ISIT u S AT MORRELLWINE .c OM cALL 800.96.WINES (800.969.4637) F ROM T H e G RO u N d uP d aniel Vollenweider changed the course of his entire life after tasting a 1990 e gon Müller Scharzhofberger a uslese. O riginally from Switzerland, and with no history of winemaking in his family, Daniel decided that he would become a winemaker in the m osel. He purchased a one hectare plot in Wolfer Goldgrube, a once-great vineyard that had fallen into disrepair, and immediately set to work. o ne thing that Wolfer Goldgrube still had going for it was its 80 year old ungrafted vines, which Daniel nursed back to health, beginning his path to building a portfolio and a reputation that gained him international renown. However, as luck would have it, the worldwide downturn in 2008 seriously slowed the export of German Riesling, and the name v ollenweider lost some momentum, yet Daniel didn't let that stop him. Since that time, the wines have taken on a cult-like status. They are looked upon as insider wines, talked about in chat rooms and Riesling tastings with tremendous respect. Then the 2015 vintage came along, and suddenly the excitement and chatter over v ollenweider exploded once again, especially regarding his range of dry, GG styled, single-vineyard wines. The v ollenweider Schimbock is one of the best examples of dry German Riesling from the amazing 2015 vintage, at a price point that is hard to believe for this level of quality, intensity, depth and longevity. ✦ Vollenweider Riesling Trocken Schimbock 2015 W a 94 » $52 "...Fresh and stony-mineral bouquet...pure, very mineral and firmly structured yet elegant Riesling made for long bottle-aging."
